# The Tools

A student needs more than classes. Each of those needs is a tool, and each tool keeps what it holds with its source.

## Daftar: Classes and mubahatha

*Live, 60%. Next: Transcribing recorded lessons on our own machines, so review can return to the lesson’s own words.*

An invitation-only workbook. Teachers and students of the hawza record a lesson if they choose, and write the questions and answers it teaches, with their sources; the form checks each entry as it is written, and a second scholar reviews it.

Nothing is written from someone’s lesson without them: the person who taught it decides what it says. Recordings and records stay their author’s, for life. Daftar works in English, Farsi and Arabic.

**Who it serves:** The teachers and students who contribute, and the scholars who review.

## Fihrist: Books

*Growing, 70%. Next: The hawza’s books as its publishing house sends them, and the Arabic books that exist only as scans.*

Search a phrase, and Fihrist tells you the book and the page, and shows you the page itself.

It never supplies quotable text. A person reads the page before anything is quoted, and every machine reading of a page is marked as one.

**Who it serves:** Researchers, and the writers of the Truth Promoters series.

## Safina: Lectures from the great scholars

*Growing, 45%. Next: More of the great scholars’ lectures from their own sites, and translation on request, labelled as a machine’s.*

Safina keeps each text exactly as the scholar’s own site served it: where and when it was read, a new version whenever the site changes it, and the recording where there is one. It keeps them with the permission of the scholars’ offices.

A term can be traced through the lessons in the order they were given, and a passage quoted in its exact words.

**Who it serves:** Researchers, and readers of the scholars’ lectures.

## Diwan: A place to work, write and research

*Live, 65%. Next: Sharing a single piece of work with a named reader.*

Diwan keeps the project’s written work character for character, with every revision and who made it. Work marked complete can no longer change, and a quotation can be locked to its source’s exact words.

Its work is private: only the people invited can read it.

**Who it serves:** The project’s writers, and the readers they invite.

## Sanad: The narrators of the hadith

*Planned, 5%. Next: Its requirements, written with the scholars who will use it; then the books of rijal.*

A map of the narrators of hadith: their chains, their teachers and students, and what each book of rijal says about them. Every statement is attributed to its book and page, never merged into a verdict of its own.

In Sanad’s own words: we do the technology; the scholars judge the narrators.

**Who it serves:** Scholars of hadith and rijal.

Sanad: not yet live.
